What you should know:
From a physiological and biochemical point of view, lipoic acid (also known as "tioctic acid", "protogen", "POF, pyruvate oxidation factor", "L. Casei acetate factor") is considered a pseudo vitamin. In fact, it has a vitamin-similar action and, even though in small amounts, can be produced by the human organism. In the human organism, lipoic acid has many functions. It has marked anti-oxidising/anti-radical properties that are used both at cell-membrane level and inside the cells themselves. The anti-radical action refers to the direct neutralisation of certain types of free radicals and, indirectly, the regeneration and reinforcement of vitamin C, vitamin E, glutathione and co-enzyme Q10.
Another action of lipoic acid, as a co-enzyme, is to transform pyruvate (metabolite of glucose) into acetate and make it available for producing energy in the Krebs cycle. Lipoic acid aids the metabolism of sugars in an energetic sense. Its action is aided and reinforced by vitamins B1 and B6 and by pyruvate itself. Due to its action on sugars, lipoic acid aids normalisation in hyperglycaemia situations (diabetes) and reduces the amount of sugars that could be transformed into fat. For this reason, in Germany lipoic acid is used as a supplement in treating complications of diabetes (e.g. diabetic neuropathy). In sports and other circles, it can be used for aiding the reduction of the fat mass and working as resistance for "better burning" the consumption of sugars and better neutralising the free radicals that are formed during physical stress. For its chemical structure, lipoic acid can bind to potentially toxic metals (e.g. mercury in dental fillings, heavy metals present in heavily polluted surroundings, etc.), performing a detoxifying action, especially at liver level.
Pharmaco-kinetic research has shown that oral taking of lipoic acid determines the maximum absorption of the substance at haematic level after just 30'-60' minutes from swallowing.
Indications for use
SPORT: a valid supplement to reduce the fat mass and toxins that form due to oxidising stress (free radicals) during physical effort. In resistance sports, it aids the metabolism of sugars in an energetic sense improving performance over the long term.
Dose: 200-300 mg (2-3 capsules) before competitions/training or before meals.
DAILY LIFE: useful in low calorie diets to reduce the fat mass and regulating situations of hyperglycaemia in diabetes. A detoxifying and liver protecting agent.
Dose: 1-2 capsules before the main meals.
Warning: keep the bottle well closed in a cool, dry and dark place.
