DIET SUPPLEMENT BASED ON L-GLUTAMINE
What you should know:
L-glutamine is an amino acid that has a very important physiological role in the human body. In particular, certain research has demonstrated that glutamine performs a critical role in maintaining muscular mass and in the immunity functions, in people affected by various illness and physically weak.
Based on clinical data, it has been assumed that taking glutamine could have beneficial effects in sports also. As glutamine has been shown as active in preserving muscular protein and antagonising the proteolytic effects of glucocorticoids in patients who have suffered traumas, it was reasonable to think that it could have an anti-proteolytic action in people who practice intense physical activity, able to induce elevated levels of glucocorticoids in the blood. Hence the possibility of reducing the catabolic effects of these hormones and help maintain an "anabolic cellular" state. Furthermore, as glutamine helps support the immunity system, especially as an important source of energy, it can prevent/attenuate infections or decrease serious inflammation associated with intense and prolonged physical exercise that, as we no, has an immune-depressing effect. This means athletes recover faster and can train more frequently.
Furthermore, glutamine can be a precursor of glucose/glycogen, can improve sensitivity to insulin and limit the negative effects of excess fats. As the gastrointestinal tract is the primary site for using glutamine, assumption of glutamine can prevent its loss by other organs, especially muscles, thus avoiding proteolytic phenomenon especially in the muscles. Therefore, glutamine can be beneficial for athletes who practice strength sports, that require large muscular masses, and for athletes who could be subject to risks of overtraining.
For all these effects, Glutamine has been classified as a "conditionally essential" amino acid (even though, from a biochemical/physical point of view it is "not essential") in patients and athletes. This means that in certain pathological and physiological situations, the human organism is not able to synthesise the necessary amount of this important amino acid. Hence the importance of Glutamine as a specific nutritional aid.
Indications for use
SPORT: this supplement should be indicated for all those athletes whose training can cause "metabolic stress" at muscular levels, with catabolic phenomenon associated with wear and loss of muscular volume.
Dose: the normal dose is between 5 and 10 grams a day. Glutamine can be dissolved in water. The dosage should be taken in proportion to muscular effort.
