Beta-alanine is the only beta-amino acid present in nature. As this amino acid is synthesised in the human body (in the liver), it cannot be obtained from proteins. Beta-alanine, with histidine, is a carnosine (beta-alanyl-histidine), a dipeptide with important functions in muscles and other organs. It is emphasised that the beta-alanine per sé does not seem to carry out specific functions or produce specific effects (with the exception of some sort of vasodilation effect). However, it is an agent limiting the synthesis of carnosine, given its very low concentration in the body. In other words, the administration of β-alanine is a unique winning strategy for the increase of carnosine levels in the organs where this dipeptide is found. In fact, the administration of L-histidine (relatively abundant in the body) does not influence carnosine levels. Direct administration of carnosine is a mistake in that its gastroenteric absorption is negligible and it is more easily degraded in the circulatory system by specific enzymes.
The increase in carnosine after administration of beta-alanine (up to an 80% increase after several weeks) results in the dipeptide’s physiological properties coming into full effect. Numerous studies have shown that carnosine is partially able to inhibit the effects of lactic acid in muscles and guarantees improved performance. Increasing carnosine in the muscles can therefore improve anaerobic or mixed aerobic/anaerobic exercise.
Other properties of carnosine arise out of its ability to inhibit “acidity” in muscle and other cells. Numerous studies have illustrated its antioxidant, anti-ageing, anti-inflammatory, scarring, tumour, and cardiocirculatory disease prevention properties, and its ability to protect cells in various tissues (primarily muscles and nerves).
Administration of β-alanine in various tests (a few grams a day for a maximum of 12 weeks) was found to be safe (there were no obvious side effects), and effective (tangible increase in carnosine levels with significant associated increase in physical performance. Furthermore, β-alanine seems to produce interesting synergic effects with creatine in both power and stamina resistance exercise. However, the effects of β-alanine tend to a maximum that coincides with the maximum observable increase in muscular carnosine.
Instructions
SPORT: β-alanine is recommended for power sports in which performance loss occurs through the “paralysing” effects of lactic acid. It is also recommended for all stamina resistance sports that involve exercising above the aerobic threshold.
dosages: since the effect of β-alanine are connected with a stable increase in muscular carnosine levels, this can be effected by at least 1-3 grams a day for 3-4 weeks.
packaging: 100 tablets (β-alanine:1 gr/tablet). Total net weight: 130 gr.
